The Modifero Passenger Seat Belt Monitoring System combines seat occupancy detection with seat belt status monitoring for minibuses, buses and other passenger transport vehicles. The system identifies whether each monitored passenger seat is occupied or unoccupied and, when occupied, whether the corresponding seat belt is fastened or unfastened. Seat-by-seat status information is processed centrally and presented to the driver through the system display.

Passenger Seat Belt Monitoring System for Minibuses & Buses

"Seat-by-Seat Occupancy and Seat Belt Status Monitoring."

The Modifero Passenger Seat Belt Monitoring System is designed for minibuses, buses, shuttle vehicles and other professional passenger transport applications where the driver needs clear information about both passenger presence and seat belt use.

The system combines an occupancy sensor installed in each monitored passenger seat with seat belt status detection. By evaluating these two signals together, the system can determine whether a seat is empty, occupied with the seat belt fastened, or occupied while the seat belt remains unfastened.

Information from the passenger seats is transmitted through the electronic seat modules to the central control unit and driver display, providing a structured overview of passenger seat belt status throughout the monitored seating area.

Occupancy + Seat Belt Status: Why Both Matter

Monitoring the seat belt buckle alone does not provide complete information. A fastened buckle does not necessarily mean that a passenger is actually occupying the seat, while an unfastened buckle only becomes relevant when the corresponding seat is occupied.

The Modifero system therefore evaluates seat occupancy and seat belt status together.

This allows the system to distinguish between an unoccupied seat, an occupied seat with the belt fastened, and an occupied seat with the belt unfastened.

How Does Passenger Seat Belt Monitoring Work?

Each monitored passenger position is equipped with a seat occupancy sensor and a compatible seat belt status sensor. During installation, the existing standard seat belt buckles on the monitored passenger seats can be replaced with seat belt buckles with integrated sensors. These provide the system with an electronic signal indicating whether the corresponding seat belt is fastened or unfastened. The occupancy sensor detects passenger presence, while the belt sensor provides information about the fastening status of the corresponding seat belt.

These signals are received by the electronic seat modules and transmitted to the main control unit, where the information is evaluated together.

The resulting seat status is presented through the driver interface, allowing the driver to identify passenger seats requiring attention without having to visually inspect every seat in the passenger compartment.

Three Seat States – One Clear Overview

Seat Unoccupied No passenger detected on the monitored seat.
Seat Occupied / Belt Fastened Passenger detected and the corresponding seat belt is fastened.
Seat Occupied / Belt Unfastened Passenger detected while the corresponding seat belt is not fastened.

Seat-by-Seat Information for the Driver

In larger passenger compartments, direct observation of every passenger can be difficult. Multiple seat rows, high-back passenger seats and different interior layouts can restrict the driver's view of the rear seating area.

Because the system monitors each connected passenger seat individually, the driver receives seat-specific occupancy and seat belt information through the display rather than relying solely on visual observation.

This is particularly useful in professional passenger transport applications where the status of multiple passenger seat belts may need to be checked efficiently.

Select the Number of Monitored Passenger Seats

The system is configured according to the number of passenger seats that require occupancy and seat belt monitoring, rather than the nominal total seating capacity of the vehicle.

Choosing the correct configuration:

Count the passenger seats that you want to equip with occupancy and seat belt monitoring and select the corresponding number from the product options.

The driver's seat is not included. A front passenger seat should only be included if it is also intended to be monitored.

Example: If your vehicle has 19 passenger seats but occupancy and seat belt monitoring is required for 18 of them, select the 18 Seats configuration.

Main System Components

  • Seat Occupancy Sensors: Detect passenger presence on each monitored passenger seat.
  • Seat Belt Buckles with Integrated Sensors: Replace the corresponding standard seat belt buckles at the monitored seating positions and provide information about whether the seat belt is fastened or unfastened.
  • Electronic Seat Modules: Receive information from the connected seat and belt sensors and transmit the seat status to the central system.
  • Main Control Unit: Processes occupancy and seat belt information received from the passenger-seat network.
  • Driver Display: Provides the driver with visual seat-by-seat information about passenger presence and seat belt status.
  • System Wiring: Provides the required electrical and communication connections between the monitored seats, electronic modules and central system.

Modular System Architecture

The system uses distributed electronic seat modules to collect information from the passenger seats. This architecture reduces the need to route every individual sensor connection directly to the main control unit and makes the system adaptable to different vehicle sizes and seating layouts.

The required sensor, module and wiring configuration is determined according to the selected number of monitored passenger seats.

Designed for Professional Passenger Transport

In minibuses and buses carrying multiple passengers, checking every passenger seat belt individually can be difficult from the driver's position. Electronic seat-by-seat monitoring provides the driver with an additional source of information and helps support established passenger safety procedures.

Suitable Applications

  • Passenger minibuses
  • Midibuses and buses
  • Employee and personnel transport vehicles
  • School and student transport vehicles
  • Hotel and airport shuttle vehicles
  • Tourism and passenger transfer vehicles
  • Special-purpose passenger vehicles
  • Professional passenger transport fleets

Part of the Modifero Passenger Safety Platform

The Passenger Seat Belt Monitoring System is part of the modular Modifero Passenger Safety Systems platform.

For applications where only passenger presence information is required, the platform is also available as a Seat Occupancy Monitoring System. Dedicated configurations are also available for Child Presence Detection in school transport applications.

Optional Fleet-Level Monitoring & Reporting

For fleet operators requiring information beyond the individual vehicle, the passenger safety platform can also be configured with additional communication and reporting capabilities.

Depending on the project configuration, passenger occupancy and seat belt status information can form part of a broader fleet-level safety monitoring and reporting solution, allowing vehicle operators to manage passenger safety information across multiple vehicles.

For this application, please see our Fleet Safety Monitoring & Reporting System.

Vehicle & Installation Configuration

Passenger seat design, seat belt configuration, seating layout and electrical installation can vary considerably between vehicles. The system configuration should therefore be selected according to the number of monitored passenger seats and the specific installation requirements of the vehicle.

For unusual seating layouts, larger buses or project-specific requirements, please contact us for a custom system configuration.

Important Safety Information:
The Passenger Seat Belt Monitoring System provides electronic information about passenger-seat occupancy and seat belt status. It is an additional monitoring aid and does not replace the responsibility of passengers, drivers or operators to comply with applicable seat belt requirements, passenger transport regulations and vehicle safety procedures.
